Today there are thousands of pianos whose ages are nearing or have passed the century mark. In many cases their lives have been spent in various climate zones resulting in radical humidity changes and sings that have deteriorated wood cells considerably.
In soundboards the degeneration of wood cells can have a devastating effect on the tone of the piano. Loss of sustaining power, unwanted noises from loose soundboard ribs, and visible cracks are the most obvious signs of deterioration.
